I close out this day
By Jonathan Berman

I close out this day as morning breaks.
I settle for a candle when there is no sun, only the haze of grey
and soft snowflakes.

The cat and I synchronize, mechanical watches.
Everything I look at is a mirror's
unrealized touches.

I close out this day with promises.
To myself and those who raised me up again, when there was nothing to hold onto
and nowhere to begin.

I close out this day undemanding.
Like tiny hairs waving in an ocean's undertow.
Enchanted by the currents like a melody, that I remember vaguely hearing so very long ago.....
